From September 16, 2018 to January 6, 2019, agnès b. Hong Kong Galerie Boutique presents New wave, Pierre René-Worms’s photos, 1st exhibition in Asia and the third part of the trilogy of the photographer at agnès b. dedicated to the post-punk movement.
New wave is a compilation of the work of Pierre René-Worms between 1977 and 1983 on young promising artists who will become, for some (U2, Dépêche Mode, Cure), the superstars of today.
1977: Punk lived. We have already moved on to something that has no name. The Police, Talking Heads, Blondie, Elvis Costello… Quick, let’s find a name, no time to double check. New wave? Ok, let’s go for New wave.
1979: Joy Division from Manchester, The Cure from Crawley, U2 from Dublin… Young people who are not really rock ‘n’ roll, looking for a certain modern look, with sounds which belong only to them.
1980: Pierre René-Worms is a 20-year-old photographer. His photos are published in Actuel, in Rock & Folk. He catches the groups travelling through Paris, or goes to pick them up in their kitchen.
Through reportage and concerts, he regularly got to meet Michka Assayas and François Gorin, young music critics. Rock-critics? Rock at the dawn of the 80s, what does it become? Where are the common features between Mink DeVille and Young Marble Giants, between The B-52’s and lan Dury, between Public Image Ltd and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark? still New Wave? And the eccentric voices (Nina Hagen, Lene Lovich, Klaus Nomi)? And the French scene (Elli et Jacno, Taxi Girl…)? And the ska of Madness, The Specials, etc.?
A whole period of beginnings, stolen moments caught by the eye of the photographer which have since become legendary. Of the moment yesterday, classics today.
